Acknowledgements

First and foremost, I’d like to thank my partner, Lindsy. You’ve stood by in support as I’ve ridden this story’s varying waves of torment. I love you and I appreciate you.

I’d also like to thank my mother and my father. Many parents would’ve at least reached for the steering wheel upon learning of their child’s desire to pursue writing, if not grab it entirely and yank. But you didn’t. You encouraged me, though I’m sure it was nerve-wracking—though I’m sure that it still is. You let me chase, and explore, and find my own path. Without the freedom to do so, I don’t think this novel would exist. Thank you.

To Caitlin Horrocks: if not for you saying in one of our workshops at Grand Valley State University, “It’s one thing to build a world; it’s an entirely different thing to tear that world down,” I also don’t think this novel would exist. Thank you—you remain a huge influence to me.

And finally, to Daniel Abbott, you, my friend, have seen more drafts of And in the Dark They Are Born than any other person, and your eyes and ears and soul have been immensely helpful throughout the entire process. If not for you, this novel definitely wouldn’t be what it is today, nor would I be the writer I am. I’ve loved working with you over the years. Here’s to many more.
